Keeping the guest out

Taking food though nectar like

Sure to be shunned stout!

It is undesirable to take even nectar while a guest is kept waiting outside.                                      (82)

ThuNaiththunai vaeLvip payan.

Hospitality

Knows no bound – nor its gains

Rests on guests’ quality!

The greatness of hospitality called a penance cannot be measured. The gains and greatness will be in direct proportion to the degree of love and respect with which hospitality is extended.                                     (87)

மடமை; மடவார்கண் உண்டு.

UdaimaiyuL inmai virundhoambal oambaa

Madamai madavaarkaN uNdu.

Not hosting while rich

Suffers drought in plenty sure

Ignorance high pitch!

Not playing host when one is rich enough is not rich but indeed in poverty; this in fact is ignorance which is seen only in the senseless people.                             (89)

10  மோப்பக் குழையும் அனிச்சம் முகம்திரிந்து

நோக்கக்குழையும் விருந்து.

Moappak kuzaiyum anichcham mugamthirindhu

Noakkak kuzaiyum virundhu.

The guest sure feels sad

Like flower when smelt withers

As the host treats bad!

A flower just withers when smelt deep; similarly a guest will feel bad and withers when the host shows a cold face at him.                             (90)
