அதிகாரம்  22


ஒப்புறவு அறிதல்

  1. கைம்மாறு வேண்டா கடப்பாடு மாரிமாட்டு

என்ஆற்றும் கொல்லோ உலகு.


Kaimmaaru vaeNdaa kadappaadu maarimaattu

En aatrum kolloa  ulagu.

Sure not for return

The noble serve the needy

Rain wants none in turn!

Rain does not expect anything from the world for the services it renders; similarly the noble people serve the needy expecting nothing in return.   (211)

  1. தாளாற்றித் தந்த பொருள்எல்லாம் தக்கார்க்கு

வேளாண்மை செய்தல் பொருட்டு.


ThaaLaatrith thandha poruL ellaam thakkaarkku

VaeLaaNmai seythal poruttu.

What the noble earn

Is for deserving needy

Not for their concern!

The one who wants to serve the needy people, saves and spends all he can for this purpose and nothing for the selfish needs.(212)

  1. புத்தேள் உலகத்தும் ஈண்டும் பெறல்அரிதே

ஒப்புரவின் நல்ல பிற.


PuththaeL ulagaththum eeNdum peralarithe

Oppuravin nalla pira.


Serving the needy

Brings better than all the good

Not for the greedy!

In the earth and heaven, one cannot find a greater act of virtue than serving the needy in the world which the greedy people never. (213)

  1. ஒத்தது அறிவான் உயிர்வாழ்வான் மற்றையான்

செத்தாருள்  வைக்கப்  படும்.

Oththadhu arivaan uyirvaazhvaan matraiyaan

SeththaaruL vaikkap patum.

Sure he is alive

Who finds and serves the needy

Rest dead though alive!

Only those who understand the world and serve the needy are deemed to be living; those who do not are as good as dead.(214)

  1. ஊருணி நீர்நிறைந் தற்றே  உலகவாம்

பேரறி வாளன்  திரு.

OoruNi neer niraindhatrae ulagavaam

Paerari vaaLan thiru.

The wealth of the great

Like water in public land

Serves all in need – treat!

The wealth of the noble who use it for serving the needy is like a tank full of water that is extensively useful to the public. (215)

6.பயன்மரம் உள்ளூர்ப் பழுத்தற்றால் செல்வம்

நயன்உடை யான்கண்  படின்.

Payanmaram uLLoorp pazhuththatraal selvam

Nayan udaiyaankaN padin.

Like a tree with fruits

In the center of the town

Wealth of the good serves!

Wealth of the virtuous people help the needy as a tree in the middle of a town with fine fruits help the people. (216)

  1. மருந்தாகித் தப்பா மரத்தற்றால் செல்வம்

பெருந்தகை யார்கண் படின்.

Marundhaakith thappaa maraththatraal selvam

Perundhakai yaarkaN padin.

Wealth of the noble

Serves like a herbal tree that

Cures sure the feeble!

Wealth with virtuous people who help the needy is like a herbal tree that helps the week and sick with all its parts.     (217)

  1. இடன்இல் பருவத்தும் ஒப்புரவிற்கு ஒல்கார்

கடன்அறி காட்சி யவர்.

Idanil paruvaththum oppuravirku olgaar

Kadan ari kaatchi yavar.

Though poor, the noble

Knows the need and helps needy

Shines like a marble!

Even if one is poor, he can help the needy in his own way and indeed he shines.                   (218)

  1. நயன்உடையான் நல்கூர்ந்தான் ஆதல் செயும்நீர

செய்யாது அமைகலா வாறு.

Nayanudaiyaan nalkoorndhaan aadhal seyumneera

Seyyaadhu amaikalaa vaaru.

It’s the noble’s grief

That his poverty denies

Joy to give relief!

It is indeed the regret of those who would like to help the needy but when they are not in a position to, due to their poverty.    (219)

  1. ஒப்புரவி நால்வரும் கேடுஎனின் அஃதொருவன்

விற்றுக்கோள் தக்கது உடைத்து.


Oppuravi naalvarum kaeduenin ahudhoruvan

VitrukkoaL thakkadhu udaiththu.


Deserves to be bought

The bad that comes on its trail

For serving the need sought!

If any bad is to come to the one who serves the needy, it is worth acquiring it even by any means.         (220)
