ITHACA POEMS 689-Brigand’s Voice and Exile

Here is a communication from dear most yet unseen friend from SPAIN”
POET OF THE WEEK - Germain Droogenbroodt

My dear Tamil friend,

Thank you for the translation and publication of ITHACA 688, a poem by the famous Portuguese poet Casimiro de Brito.

Our Sicilian translator recommended me the enclosed poem. The poem remembered me of the countless images we see daily of people, including children, suffering of war (recently in Palestine) , in Syria, in Africa etc.
Long ago, after the Cambodian dictator Pol Pot had exiled many thousands of Cambodians, I visited one of the refugee camps in Thailand at the Cambodian border. The picture of the young girl I made there suits perfectly to the poem, representing thousands of children, living in similar situations.

Here in Spain and in Italy, many people freeing poverty drowned, just like that little boy, a picture, seen by millions of people, but the majority of people do not protest for more humanity, only for their own sake…

Best wishes

Germain

ps I did not react earlier to your translation as you sent it to my private email, which I open only now and then. Better use this one. I check daily.

GIVE ME A BRIGAND’S VOICE, LORD

Picture by Germain Droogenbroodt, girl in Cambodian refugee camp

Give me a brigand’s voice, Lord,

and a lion’s pen
on this earth
that sheds blood and
shows

unspeaking children
with terror in their eyes.

Justice is
air
water
bread

grass that plays up to your knees
and a lilting voice…

flowering skylarks in their nests
that war shakes up
and devastates.

A child

washed ashore by the sea
lays lifeless at the beach
Indelible the image
Or not?

GERMAIN DROOGENBROODT

நாடு கடத்தப்பட்ட

ஒரு குழந்தை

கடலினால்

கரையில் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டது.

கடற்கரையில்

உயிரற்று கிடக்கிறது.

அழிக்கமுடியாத உருவம்

அல்லவா?
