TALE OF A BLOGGER 24!

Today it is 1149th day of ENVIUS THOUGHTS and 1200th post necessitating the TALE OF A BLOGGER in tune with the tradition of the Blog!
This tale 24 is again for the second time unique (is it peculiar!?!?!?)- as it is a SATURDAY STORY and not a SUNDAY STORY as usually the TALES come only on SUNDAYS in the last three years. Blog has entered into the FOURTH year and I wish this is not a forerunner for the things to come! Yet these two TALES appear on Saturdays!!!
Normally the Blogger makes it a point to give a longer story instead of a twelve line poem on Sundays when the viewers will be more at leisure and can comfortably read a longer write. This week it has so happened that 1200th post also falls on a Saturday as the 1150th did and could not be negotiated and hence this TALE 24 comes as a SATURDAY STORY and the Sunday Story will appear on 22nd April on the chosen subject!
It is extremely gratifying that with the grace of the Almighty GODDESS OF LEARNING SARASWATHY, WORD PRESS and my esteemed viewers the Blog has travelled to its 1200th post happily and uninterruptedly since its launch on 25th February 2015.
As is the practice we shall look into the progress of overall views of Envius Thoughts since the last Tale 23 on 3rd March 2018:
09/03/2018 1106th day- 1156th post- 1,35,000
16/03/2018 1113th day 1163rd post- 1,36,000
21/03/2018 1119th day 1169th post – 1,37,000
27/03/2018 1124th day 1175th post- 1,38,000
01/04/2018 1129th day 1180th post 1,39,000
08/04/2018 1136th day 1187th post 1,40,000
20/04/2018 1149th day 1200th post 1,41,

In this way number of views is strongly progressing giving a sense of achievement. I take pride and pleasure to communicate the crossing of every 1000 views to all my well wishers through all possible manner- WhatsApp, Facebook two Accounts, Bloggers’ Meet-Up, gmail and so on!
I am often reminded of a quote that I read about 57 years ago,, while I was a student of Alagappa College, Karaikudi: “Art and Literature of the highest order cannot flourish in a world that is increasingly becoming mechanical and the society a rocket”! Yes in these fast food days where and how does one find time for literary activities!
Yet there are several groups devoted to foster literature of different genres. Envius Thoughts has already carried Sunday Stories on CHENNAI POETS CIRCLE, VIJAYAWADA poets group and so on. There is a nice group= of course a little sophisticated and dwell in the higher ranges of POETRY World-the group known s INDIA POETRY CIRCLE from Chennai. They innovate activities among the members and go ahead in great way.”CONFLUENCE “ in one such activity a nice anthology! In writing poem one poet will contribute one line each! First line from the first poet, 2nd from the next, 3rd from the third and so on!
They meet every month and present their poems and discussions ensue! A great experience indeed!
The IPC has members from different parts of our Motherland -East and West, North and South!
One of the members is a retired Professor of English from Kerala who became a little close to me and our esteemed viewers will find her thoughts on Envius Thoughts as Sunday Story tomorrow! Tale of the Blogger has yielded place to a new Poet in the blog! I am sure the story will be enjoyable!

During the Tale period, a new anthology was brought out with the name and title “METVERSE MUSE GOLDEN JUBILEE ISSUE” from Vishakapatnam beautifully and scholarly edited by a veteran Poet and Editor DR. H. TULSI a detailed review of this work was published in this Blog on 18th March. (can be viewed from the archives of March 2018).
Opportunities are provided by the Lord almighty in any form and in many forms!
One such came to me a couple of days back. A poem was written by an young girl suffering from terminal cancer nd the hospital authorities from abroad have sent it all over the globe and I have sent the same to about 300 friends of mine-poet and non poet friends by mail. I reproduce the same with a request “LET US HELP”.
Slow Dance
This is a poem written by a teenager with cancer.
She wants to see how many
people get her poem.

It is quite a poem, please pass it on.
This poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a
New York Hospital.
It was sent by a medical doctor Make sure to read what is in the closing statement AFTER THE POEM.

SLOW DANCE
Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won’t last.

Do you run through each day on the fly?
When you ask, “How are you?”
Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed,
with the next hundred chores running through your head?

You’d better slow down
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short
The music won’t last.

Ever told your child,
We’ll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,’Hi’

You’d better slow down.
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won’t last..

When you run so fast to get somewhere,
You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift….
Thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

FORWARDED E-MAILS ARE TRACKED TO OBTAIN THE TOTAL COUNT.

Dear All:
PLEASE pass this mail on to everyone you know –
even to those you don’t know!
It is the request of a special girl, who will soon leave this world
due to cancer.

This young girl has 6 months left to live, and as her dying wish, she wanted to send a letter telling everyone to
live their life to the fullest, since she never will.
She’ll never make it to prom, graduate from high school,
or get married and have a family of her own.

By you sending this to as many people as possible, you can give her and her family a
little hope, because with every name
that this is sent to, the American Cancer Society will donate 3 cents per name
to her treatment and recovery
plan. One guy sent this to 500 people! So I know that we can at least send it to 5 or 6.

It’s not even your money, just your time! Pls read n forward … !!

ENGLISH VERSION:
Oh, God of Death! Yama! When did you become blind?
Do you need our Jayendhra so urgently?
It looks to me as if it is this morning that I had the darshan FIFTY FIVE YEARS AGO, of Maha Periyava and Jayendhr on the banks of a lake in a place called AKKAGARI PETA in Andhra Pradesh.
In the year 1992, Jayendhra after fully reading my Tamil poetry collection titled “NILAVAE NEE SOL” (MOON YOU TELL ME), expressed his joy and blessed me to write more and more and returneedcthe book to me keeping MANTHRAAKSHATHA and FLOWERS.You have taken away my PRECEPTOR away.Where have you taken HIM?
In 2013, YOU honored me with SEVARATHNA AWARD- how can I forget that great moment in my life?
Again in 2013, after hearing my Tamil translation of Thiyagabrahmam’s Pancharathna keerthanas, He appreciated and smoothly in an unaffending tone told me that it is good that such keerthanaas are left in their original language!I can no longer have HIS darshan in the Mutt.
My close friend Poet Kanchi Muthu. Ramamurthy feels as if he is orphaned.(He is the person normally takes me to His Holiness)Just a week back I asked you in ENGLISH “Oh, DEATH when will you die?”Is this shocking news this morning?
Yes, GOD of DEATH , do what all you can do?
You have taken away my mentor Mahakavi Bharathiyar who said: oh, God of Death, you come here, I shall kick you with my feet.” You have taken my father, Mother and Wife and I hope you keep them safe as you have to show them to me one day.

“Tearful tribute to the Seer, who guided us all for several decade. Who can forget his kind smile? A genius in all our great scriptures, Vedas and samskaras. A torch bearer and a guiding star to the entire humanity. It is great loss for all of us.” Jagannathan , PRO, Sevalaya in response to my mail.

No high or low, no rich or poor, no lettered or unlettered
No weak or strong. no tall or short, no theist or atheist
No young or old-ten or hundred, five or fifty, men or women
All are equal to the Yamadharma- when the time comes He comes!

As long as we are blessed to be alive on earth let us do
Our best to the humanity- loving all and serving all,
Helping ever and hurting never- that is all we can and should
Keep the society in peace and harmony, joy and pleasant!

DEATH, WON’T YOU DIE!

We know pretty well that one enters the earth will have to make exit one day. When, none on earth can predict and so also how, where and why!!!!

Just the other day I translated a nice poem of Mahakavi Bharathiyar who challenged the God of DEATH, called in Hindu pantheon as LORD YAMA-‘YAMA DHARMARAJA’ and translated the same into English which I reproduce below in original Tamil, its transliteration and translation with my comment:

The great patriotic, national poet Mahakavi Subrahmanya Bharathiyar had unbounded patriotism, abundant love for freedom political and more, love for the languages-he was a master of eighteen languages which is not an exaggeration- love for the people and their tradition and culture, infectious ‘optimism’ and fearlessness.

In this Sunday story,  we see his beautiful poem on –“Address to the Lord Yama”.

In the Hindu pantheon Lord Yama is the God of Death. He knows when to take away the life of a person born on earth and he does his duty meticulously!

TRANSLATION

Yamaa! I treat you as a trivial grass-

Come near my feet! I shall simply stamp you ! Yah (Yamaa)

Taken I to my heart the award of the Lord

Pray to the saints of yore who gave me sermons –

To save the elephant that cried “oh, my great God”

Do you forget fool Yamaa what happened to your crocodile-                                                                                                         -yah, (Yamaa)

MarkaNda- who surrendered to the Lord Shiva who gulped

Poi

Whose life you wanted to take- your suffering and humiliation

I am aware of- here

Get away four thousand miles! I order you-

I appear before you as Hari Narayana- yah (Yamaa)

COMMENT

This is one of the most beautiful poems of Mahakavi Bharathiyar who chose to challenge the God of Death- YAMA in Hindu pantheon. It is believed by the people that Lord Yama is very powerful. Bharathiyar in this poem describes two mythological beliefs and says that all powerful Yamaa could not succeed on the basis of which the poet challenges Yamaa to come near him and he will simply stamp him under his feet! He also orders Yamaa to go four thousand miles away!!

One incident is Yamaa’s decision to take away the life of an elephant by making a crocodile to drag the elephant into deep water and kill. When the elephant called Lord Vishnu, Yamaa through the crocodile could do no harm to the devoted elephant and had to quit his attempt!

Again when Lord Yamaa wanted to take away the life of a strong devotee of Shiva much against his own father’s advice to pray only Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva protected Markandeya and Yamaa could do nothing!

Quoting these two mythological happenings, Bharathiyar challenges Yamaa to come near him and he will simply make him to pulp by the poet’s feet! What a lovely theme, content and presentation!

With all these assertions from the Poet, God of Death goes on with HIS duties as one of the trinities –Creator-protector and Destroyer- as Bharathi himself fell a victim to the Yama –in Chennai through the temple elephant!

I recollect and reproduce one or two of my thoughts in verses on the theme of DEATH:

.   . DEATH-PERMANENT!

Oh! God of Death! Lord Yama- thee alone permanent
In this world and earth- eternally impermanent!
Health is lost but sure one day with medicines retrieved
Wealth is lost but sure one day with efforts is retrieved
Name is lost but sure one day with honesty retrieved
Fame is lost but sure one day with good conduct retrieved
House is lost but sure one day with a new one retrieved
Job is lost but sure one day with someone else retrieved!
Alas! When the God of death takes one away from earth
Permanently gone not to be retrieved till next birth!
Sure not in the same form and name, house and roof
Oh! God of Death! Lord Yama-thee alone permanent
In this world and earth- eternally impermanent
Mourn not death, may be the dead had relief permanent!

DREADED DEATH

What is this DREADED DEATH
Knows no distinction
Young or old, poor or rich
Either sex, healthy or sick
Virtuous or vicious, dunce or diligent
Unlettered or highly literate
Dedicated Mahatma or despicable bandit
Social worker or menace to the society
All are same in the grip of death!

Death at times brings relief
Most of the times nothing but grief!

In one’s life time
That he lives is not a matter
How he lives is all that matters!

Man’s greatness is not in being
Sure one agrees that in doing!

Death can remove the physical self
Sure not his words and deeds
That indeed make him live for age!

Birth is alike getting out of sleep
Death is akin to getting into sleep
Fear not death, but boldly face!

Alive are dead; Dead are alive
All in the manner we live
And how we serve the society with love
To live in peace and amity, joy and cheers!

In English

God given life is this

Nature made life is this

Leading sans any deficiency

Oh, DEATH- why should you come?

Love incarnation is my mom

Culture incarnation is my preceptor

Affection incarnate is my wife-to them

Oh, Death- why should you come?

That is a child not knowing hypocrisy

He is the leader in the hearts of all

He is a poet renowned in the world – to them

Oh, Death-why should you come?

Noble minded is he

Broad hearted is he

Noble service he has rendered –to them

Oh, Death- why should you come?

You know not virtues, nor anger

You know not good mind, nor money power

You know no sect, nor age

Daily you come and leave us in grief!

You know no lively life, nor deathly living

You know no bad, nor good

You know no scholar, nor the poor

All are equal in thy lap.

Close one you know not, nor the other

Parents you know not,  nor what they got

Virtuous you know not, nor the opposite

Oh, Death-If time comes you come.

“Oh, Death- how cruel you are”

As I brood over the issue

Came to my mind meaningful thought

“What shall we do if DEATH were to DIE?”

If we think of DEATH good will increase

If we think of DEATH bad will decrease

If we think of DEATH mind will scale higher

If we think of DEATH Virtues will develop!

Hence

“Death you don’t meet with Death”

Pray God and happily carry on!

This was written by me on 23rd July 1976!

My esteemed viewers may be wondering why all on a sudden a Sunday story on DEATH!

Yes three deaths of my great friends   all in the course of a day took me by grief on SIXTH FEBRUARY resulting in this write up.

First was one of my dear Poet Friends POET B. JAYARAMAN, a retired bank officer and Treasurer of CHENNAI POETS’ CIRCLE, a very affable, decent and interesting personality.

Second is a retired Development Officer of Life Insurance Corporation of India which I deem as my home where I served for more than four decades by name K. Chandrasekaran who was the General Secretary of the NATIONAL FEDERATION OF INSURANCE OF FIELD WORKERS OF INDIA.

.Third was my fellow Officer while I was Senior Divisional Manager of LIC in Kadapa Division by name G. Gopalakrishnan.

As already referred to DEATH knows no age or sex, status or position, the rich or poor, literate or illiterate, when destined lives taken to HIS lap!

What cannot be cured must be endured!

ALL SOULS DAY is today.

All living beings created by the Lord Almighty
Have to make their exits one day however mighty
‘Born to die and die to born ’way of the world all over
Right it is to remember the dead and gone for ever!

Practice of all religions is to remember the dead
On the day of death each year-, in India Pitru Paksha,
The Chinese Ghost Festival, the Japanese Bon Festival.
The Roman custom was that of the Lemuria.

On this day Christians all over visit Churches, cemeteries
Offer food to the departed souls- relatives, ringing bells for
The dead to comfort, sharing of soul Cakeswith the poor
Gave the dead respite from hunger, lighting candles to kindle
Light for the dead souls in the darkness! Beliefs indeed
Never to be questioned but honored and followed!
