Come September First great thoughts of Insurance Industry
Comes to mind! Concept India had practiced heftily
From time immemorial-Joint family system
Symbolized great practice! life insurance!

Came the current practice years hundred and forty eight ago
With the British Insurance companies in Eighteen seventy!
More than two hundred and forty companies Indian and foreign
Offering life Insurance protection to the selected citizens!

Came Independence and great leaders with Nehruji at the helm
Deshmuk as Finance Minister thought of nationalization
Born the great Life Insurance Corporation this day first September
sixty two years ago in Nineteen Fifty Six! Happy birth day to you LIC!

The above is what I wrote on this day a  year ago!
My esteemed viewers would have noticed that I always refer to LIC of India as my Alma mater! My Alma mater can be only Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar High School, Karaikudi or Alagappa College, Karaikudi where I had my school and collegiate education upto 1961!
Websters Dictionary would say “ALMA MATER” is the college or school which one has graduated.
But I do deem the great premier Public Sector Organization LIFE INSURANCE CORPORATION OF INDIA which I served for more than FOUR DECADES as Alma mAter because it is here that I learnt the ART AND SCIENCE OF LIFE AND LIVING!
LIC was born on FIRST SEPTEMBER NINETEEN FIFTY SIX -as LIC taking into in its fold more than 240 PRIVATE INSURANCE COMPANIES IN INDIA BIG and SMALL!
Joining LIC in 1961 in Thanjavur, gradually rose to the level of Deputy Zonal Manager on the date of retirement in March 2001- after having faced 12 transfers and served in Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Ooty, Madras, Madurai,Erode, Bikaner, Salem and Kadapa.
As I referred above LIC was my Alma Mater where I learnt the art and science of Life and Living- moving with and dealing with men and matters- happy policy holders, irate policy holders, intelligent agency force, good, bad and indifferent colleagues, prospects, union members and leaders of different hues- all taught me the art and science of life and living = -at the cost of repetition!
Even today after , 19 years of retirement, I pleasantly and happily recollect my vast experience in the life insurance industry.
Normally any employee will be availing the so called LPR-Leave Preparatory to Retirement- SIX months ,Sick Leave etc. usually. I always used to feel that this leave is not to be availed as a matter of routine unless one is really sick and needs it. So I went on with my routine till 28th February.

Came 28th February last working day to be in my career- yes it was only officially! In the farewell party, ZM told “Though Mr. Subbaraman is officially retiring today, I have made a request and he has also accepted that he will help me till the books are closed for the year. I expect all your continued cooperation to Mr. Subbaraman.”

After the party, an interesting dialogue with my ZM. Me: “Sir, you know well that I will be in the office at 9.00 am sharp every day and leave by 6.00pm. Now that no car allowances, no running expenses to be met by LIC, poor retired employee, I cannot afford to come by my car. At that part of the day buses will be heavily crowded and hence I will leave my home after 9.30 in the morning and come to the office by 11.00 am and similarly leave the office by 4.00pm and reach home by the time the buses get crowded.”

ZM: “Subbaraman! Do you think that I am that heartless? I will send the office car to pick you up and drop daily.”

My response (with a loud laughter): Sir, Subbaraman can afford to come in his own car for any number of days at his own expense. Don’t worry; I will be in the office as usual”.

Yes; I did like that all through the next 69 days; no salary, no allowances, no leave, no right or authority to pass a voucher for 10 paise, no right to initial a paper, no signature in any letter or note! Divisions were reporting to me as in the past 2 years and 10 months while in service. 31st March 2001 came. Cash- closing on 4th April, NB closing on 14th April, Claims closing and Accounts closing by the month end. Year was over and on 8th May the ZM called for a conference of Sr. /DMs in the Zonal Office Conference Hall, the then Chairman was also invited and that was the real last working Day for me and I was given a touching FAREWELL!

Sometime in the middle of April, I sought LEAVE for a couple of days to attend the Sr. DM’s daughter’s marriage in Coimbatore. The LEAVE was GRANTED with a request that I may hand over some papers of great importance to the Divisions- in — Charge of Vellore, Salem on my train route,  Coimbatore and Thanjavur which I did meticulously!!!!!”

An unforgettable CLAIM SETTLEMENT

CLAIM CHEQUE WITHIN TWENTY FOUR HOURS OF DEATH!

One important event which I used to quote, wherever the opportunity arose in the Conferences at various levels, the meetings etc. goes like this. That always stands fresh in memory. One morning I was late in getting up as I felt a little tired; I could get up only at 5.00 AM. To some extent I thought of taking a day off. There was one Tamil news paper of high standard which normally carries a good number of obituary references. One important person of the town-wife of a well known industrialist- chartered President of Rotary Club- passed away on the previous day. As a person known well, notwithstanding my tiresomeness, I decided to go to their house, not very far away from mine, to condole the death. Funeral was planned for 3.00 pm in the day. Having seen the dead body, as is the custom I had my bath and having started the day, I thought of attending the office without any field visits. On the way to the office, it struck me that the deceased lady had a few life insurance policies with our Branch on which loan was availed not far back. I phoned up to a marketing official to trace the numbers. It was strongly working in my mind as to how the death claim can be settled on their return from the cremation ground. The numbers were traced, with the cooperation of the department concerned, necessary Intimation letter was prepared, Claim forms were prepared, and Discharge form was prepared including the cheque in favor of the nominee- the husband of the deceased!. After ascertaining the return of the family members after the rituals, I went along with the representatives of the Claims department, officers and the marketing wing to the policy holder’s house got the required forms filled up and letters signed and handed over the cheque- all within TWENTY FOUR HOURS from the time of death- an action that never was done in the corporation — I don’t think ever after that, a death claim was settled within 24 hours of death. That bigwig gentleman talked about the LIC’s settlement of the death claim so expeditiously to all those big people of Erode including the District Collector who came to condole the death! At the end of the day all the requirements for settlement of the claim were in the file except the Death Certificate from the competent authority which was also subsequently submitted within a week. People inimical to such activities in a derisive tone asked me whether I will settle all death claims so expeditiously; I told them “yes- sure” if it is exactly like the one that we had settled! But I did not come across any such case till my Branch experience came to an end!

In that very year there was another sensational tragic death of a local Doctor and the claim was settled in record time and both these two death claim settlements fetched an additional TWO CRORES of New business that year taking the Branch to the top in the Division!

Yet another Death claim related experience! At the instance of the Divisional office, I wanted to get the requirements for settlement of a death claim in respect of an Erode resident on behalf of another Branch. After having helped in complying with all the requirements and receiving the same, when I was about to leave the house, the claimant came behind me as if to see me off and in a hushed voice he asked me how much he has to pay me for the extra services rendered! I was indeed angry at his request; but posed as if I was so furious that I threw all the papers in his face, asked him to take care of the case himself and shouted at him that LIC is not such an organization and its officers will never succumb to such demeaning offers. Shocked client apologized profusely and I took all the papers from him and left!

JEEVAN JYOTI YATRA

Organized in Bikaner Division!

Never in the history of the Corporation till then was a publicity campaign organized; when I suggested a novel program with the caption “JEEVAN JYOTI YATRA” to cover 42 centers in the Division- where we had  Headquarters of our 42 Development Officers over a period of 21 days in the Divisional Management Committee Meeting, it was received with skepticism. But as I was a little persistent, we called the representatives of all the classes of employees and some leading agents, the idea was well received very enthusiastically and in the course of a fortnight decisions were taken, planning was done, all infrastructure were devised for the success of the yathra. Issue of the ‘on the spot policy’ and ‘claim cheque presentation’ in each of the centers was a part of the yathra program.

Though immediate procuration of new business was not the objective, the Division could get more than a crore of new business during the yathra. Talk of the Divisional area was LIC’s innovative Publicity programme! It provoked the society to the extent of two of the news papers writing editorials- one criticizing the LIC and the other greatly appreciating the novel campaign!

STINT IN KADAPA- A GOLDEN PERIOD

I took charge and made certain changes in some of the then existing practices which was endearing to all.

I started well and the year 1995–96 saw the KADAPA Division occupying NUMBER I position at the all India level in one count, NUMBER III in another count and NUMBER VII in a third count! In the first BMs’ conference of the year, the reasons for the success were analyzed and some ran thus: (1) I never asked the BMs for New Business! (2) Full freedom was given to the HOBs to move about and take care of marketing activities without prejudice to the administrative responsibilities. (3) For the first time Division in its history had a TELUGU speaking Senior Divisional Manager!!!!!!!! (4) All out support was flowing from the Divisional office to the Branches. (5) Cooperation and support from all sections of the employees.

One important episode remains green. In the Induction Programme for Sr. Divisional Managers at Management Development Center, Mumbai one of the visiting Faculty members made a complaint about the servicing in the LIC- normally it is done probably to provoke the participants! Immediately after the Session is over the Faculty will spend some time with the Principal in his cabin. I followed them and requested the honorable visiting Faculty his grievance, telling him all out efforts will be made to redress the same. He told that he is not having the details readily and it pertained to the non receipt of the policy document from Calcutta. He promised to give the details once he gets back to his office. Accordingly in an hour’s time the details were passed on to me. I took up the matter with my counterpart in Kolkatta and could get the problem solved in a fortnight! Mistake was partly on the policy holder- not keeping the office his change of address and partly with the LIC.

Normally after every training Session/workshop I attended, I used to give a feed back to the concerned under copy to my higher offices and the then RM (P&IR), Hyderabad acknowledged and appreciated the service rendered.

A few things remain green in mind after seventeen years of my leaving the Division- in 1998.

One was the honor that I got at the hands of the Zone- in- charge as the “EMPLOYEES’ SENIOR DIVISIONAL MANAGER” in a Conference of SDMs. Yes; this was my response: “If the ZM chose to honor me like this on the basis of the fact, that I diverted the budget that was allotted for Painting the DO premises, to painting the Staff Quarters in Kadapa, I will gladly accept the honor! Painting is done not for the sake of employees; but to strengthen the buildings that remained unpainted for quite a few years whereas the DO building had it recently and kept in a good state of repairs and look”.

Another episode that stands green in my mind is this: One of our Branch Managers attended a session in the National Insurance Academy, Pune. One of the important sessions was on “ROLE MODEL”. When the participants were asked to give a note on the Role Model according to the individual and whether he/she has come across one and if so the details. It would appear that he expressed that his Senior Divisional Manager was his role model and justified in the discussions his statement. Don’t be shocked; I was that SDM!?!?!? I know for sure that I can’t be, yet………………………..! This I came to know when I went to NIA for some Session and the Director told me and other participants about this and asked me the secret of my success. I simply told that the Manager had so much of love and affection, respect and regard which I may not deserve. What else it is?

As usual, Insurance Week –week of EIGHT days was celebrated all the three years when I was there with the cooperation of all sections. “RUN FOR LIFE INSURANCE” was a special feature with the volunteers donning special Tshirt, procured from Tiruppur, Tamilnadu for the occasion.

Campus- a big campus with DO building, Staff quarters, Community Hall, Guest House and SDM’s quarters with a well found Residents’ Association having a lot of activities-observing Ugadhi, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Christmas, New Year Day and so on with all sincerity and solemnity.

All LIC sports activities were carried out with genuine concern and interest.

I vividly have in mind the case of the termination order issued for a sub-staff member in one of the Branches. Convinced that it was too severe a punishment for the offence committed, the matter was taken up with higher authorities and the order was rescinded. Probably this was also a cause for my honor of being called ‘Employees’ SDM’!!!

‘Kavi sammelan’ organized was well received as an incentive to the high producers among the marketing team.

Perfect liaison and rapport with the public, with district administration, other organizations all added to the glory and popularity of LIC and those connected with the great Institution.

Three year stint was drawing nearer and I was to retire in 2009 February as per the retirement age 58. Unusually, for the first time in my career, I was asked to choose Hyderabad or Chennai for my final transfer. For obvious reasons, I chose Chennai and joined the Southern Zonal Office, Chennai.

In spite of several private life insurance companies having come into being and operating in full throttle, consequent on denationalization, GIGANTIC L I C maintains its greatness and top position both in sales and service. Retired or serving, all connected are legitimately proud of the tremendous progress LIC is making year after year!

This Blog I started with my first post titled “MY TRYST WITH LIFE INSURANCE CORPORATION OF INDIA” one thousand six hundred and seventy days ago!The Blog today has a total views of nearly 2,10,000 from more than 210 countries. I am proud LIC – my Alma Mater- is taking care of me even at this age of 78 plus!
Let me close this Sunday story with this and we shall continue tomorrow as usual. Till then and later all our lives may God be with us! Thanks.

Insurance-a great concept from the days of yore
Joint family system practiced by our ancestors
Indeed great! But collapsed – social revolution!
Insurance for economic problems great solution!

Lack of awareness keeps all away from insurance
Despite a big team is ready for assistance!
Excuses readily offered for not going in
Insurance is a concept purchase-invisible!

On this day let us all review our insurance needs
Take concrete decisions for the benefit of all
Life or general a must for the family sure
waste not time to go in for safety it is pure!

MY SWEETEST SONG!

Today is SEPTEMBER FIRST – the day in 1956- my Alma mater great LIFE INSURANCE CORPORATION  where I learnt the art and science of LIFE and LIVING for more than four decades- was born. A week following COME SEPTEMBER FIRST” is named as INSURANCE WEEK and great celebrations are observed all over the Corporation in India and abroad.

I pleasantly recollect  my SWEETEST THOUGHTS of my services in LIC for more than 40 years and the Insurance Week Celebrations I observed in various places I have worked during 1962-2001 and share the same 3ith my Esteemed Viewers o ENVIUS THOUGHTS.
“We look before and after

And pine for what is not

Our sincerest laughter

With some pain is fraught

“Our sweetest memories are those that tell of saddest thoughts”

a great quote of P B Shelly in his immortal poem  “ODE TO A SKYLARK”.

Inaugurating 1600th Session and the open air class room “SHANTHINIKETHAN” in LIC Zonal Training Center, Ambattur, Chennai in 2000.
Inaugurating 1600th Session and the open air class room “SHANTHINIKETHAN” in LIC Zonal Training Center, Ambattur, Chennai in 2000.

In the life of our nation, no other financial Institution has played such a sterling role as Life Insurance Corporation of India. Yes; LIC is entering its seventy one  year of service today. Every year commencing on first September LIC observes INSURANCE WEEK CELEBRATIONS for a week and I was very, very particular that the WEEK must be observed meticulously in letter and spirit on all the seven days without exception and hence I in my forty years of LIC service, started organizing the Week at my different stages-as AAO (Development) in Coimbatore during 1969-1972, as ABM  (Administration) in Ooty (1972-1975), as SSS Liaison Officer, Thanjavur Divisional Office (1975-1978), as Administrative Officer (SDM Secretarial/Development (1981-1983), as  Branch/Senior Branch Manager in Erode Branch I (1983-1987), Coimbatore Avinashi Road  Branch (1987-1991), as Marketing Manager, Bikener, Thanjavur and Salem (1991-1995), as Senior Divisional Manager Kadapa (1995-1998), as Secretary(Marketing) Zonal Office, Chennai (1998-2001). I had the pleasure of involving myself directly with the celebrations in all these stages and places. While I was Administrative Officer (Audit and Inspection) South Zone (1978-1981) I could not involve in the Week. In this way, THIRTY Insurance Week Celebrations in which my direct involvement was there and they remain as quite SWEETEST THOUGHTS! Sitting at my Flat in Jeevan Bima Nagar, Chennai, brooding over the past at my 76th year of age, I vividly and pleasantly look back on these Insurance Week Celebrations” which I would like to share with my great and esteemed viewers and friends present and  past of LIC.

In my first post in my ENVIUS THOUGHTS in https://nvsr.wordpress.com I have shared exhaustively “MY TRYST WITH LIFE INSURANCE CORPORAION OF INDIA”- four decade long journey!

Hence I would strictly touch upon my sweetest thoughts of the INSURANCE WEEK CELEBRATIONS only in this post.

Normally my Insurance Week extends to EIGHT days-eighth day- ADULT LITERACY DAY!

First of September falling on a week day will be the monthly business closing day in a Branch and hence the celebration will be restricted to the Inauguration of SPECIAL SERVICE COUNTER by a local dignitary in the Branch office premises.

Since it was my strong belief that the occasion should give a fillip to the image of the Institution, the rest of the seven days events will be conducted outside the Branch premises. One day will be for the children’s drawing, painting, essay writing like competition in any school premises. Another day for workers in a factory-an elocution contest for the workers on the benefit of Life insurance for them will be organized. Yet another day Woman’s day in a Woman’s hostel like YWCA etc. On all September fifth- Teachers’ Day will be organized in a local school –with a breakfast to the teachers-speeches in appreciation of the good work turned out by the teachers for the society. The school will be selected in such a way that Salary Savings Scheme can be introduced or extended in a big way!

Another day a talk in the Rotary/Lions/JCs Club about LIC and its achievements in serving the society will be delivered. Seventh day valedictory of the week will be held in a public auditorium with prize distribution and some cultural programme with an outsider Chief Guest.

Eighth day ADULT LITERACY day, in the adult education center in a village – some donations like books, electric lights etc will be made; participation in Government arranged functions.

With slight variations in programs, all these thirty years celebrations are still the sweetest songs in my memory and pass through like a film!

In Erode Branch, with the cooperation of administrative and marketing teams, a Bus Shelter was donated in one year; one page supplementary on the Branch growth and achievements was brought out three years.

This was almost the same pattern everywhere where I served, Bikaner or Coimbatore, Salem or Thanjavur,  Kadapa or Madurai!

In particular the way in which Insurance Week Celebrations in Thanjavur Division render sweet songs. My great colleagues in Thanjavur Division, besides other programmes in the Town Hall in the center of the city and in the Divisional Office premises performed a folk lore called VILLUP PATTU depicting the history of life insurance and the LIC and later as a rural  publicity program was performed in several rural pockets which naturally won  tremendous response from the public. The folk lore involves singing and speaking to the accompaniment of striking the strings of a big bow with a foot long stick.

A typical VILLUP PATTU scene- a great folklore!
A typical VILLUP PATTU scene- a great folklore!

Extensive press coverage used to be given in Hindu to Indian Express to Dinamalar to Dinathanthi!

More heartening were the reports that appeared in Yogakshema and Southern Splendor SZ house magazine and South Central and Northern Zone House magazines.

These paper cuttings and the respective house magazines in my home library when I go through after 16 years of leaving LIC take me to very heavens!

A view of the YOGAKSHEMA prestigious house magazine of LIC of India.
A view of the YOGAKSHEMA prestigious house magazine of LIC of India.

“Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive but to be young was very heaven” a great poet wrote about Industrial  Revolution! It was indeed a bliss to serve LIC for forty long years and more. In fact LIC is my Alma Mater where I learnt the great art and science of Life and living!

I took legitimate pride whenever YOGAKSHEMA the prestigious House magazine of LIC carried my articles on different subjects in those days when I was in service. But then, to find a story after 14 years of retirement in AUGUST 2015 ISSUE OF YOGAKSHEMA written by Shri Hari Krishan Chaudhary, Chandigar under the title: “An encounter with a Septuagenarian Poet”  was heartwarming and took me to ecstasy as that encounter was with this writer!!!!!

While I am thankful to the author I am grateful to the Editor of Yogakshema for having published the same. I am indeed overwhelmed with the nice gesture shown to me by my Alma Mater.

I have reproduced the article for the ready reference to the readers along with the letter of my former colleague in Coimbatore Avinashi Road Branch about a quarter century ago!

GEETHA PRABHAKARAN

Sir,

I have attached herewith the scanned copy of the one page article by Shri Hari Krishan Chaudhary in the August 2015 issue of ‘Yogakshema’. The soft copy of the magazine is yet to be received from the publishers.

Sir, I felt very proud reading about your accomplishments and went about bragging in my department about your being my first boss when I had just joined LIC.

Hearty Congratulations on all your achievements and I wish you many more accolades!

With warm regards,

Geeta Prabhakaran

Here are a few photographs taken during the Insurance Week Celebrations in different places and different years for the perusal of my respected and beloved viewers from more than 210 countries.  Some of these photographs are my great possessions indeed!

Photos are always very great memory servers! I am very fond of yesterday’s photos in the print form and in fact I have a few with me for almost four decades!; in these digital days, any number of photos of any decades are well stored in our computer system; yet the printed photos have their own charm and beauty! I do preserve some of them so carefully that they come to my help for any occasion and in any of my literary journeys!

In this way, the songs that I hear of Insurance Week Celebrations in different stations and different years are indeed sweetest .  I used to tell my agents in those days that they should perform in such a manner that will remain ever sing sweet songs and I will be happily recollecting the same in my seventies and eighties reclining in my easy chair and responded splendidly in all my marketing assignments. Precisely that is what I am doing now on my tryst with LIC and in particular these Insurance Week Celebrations.

Thanks my dear viewers for your patient viewing!

FEED BACK ON “MY TRYST WITH LIC”

“ENVIUS THOUGHTS” commenced through https://nvsr.wordpress.com  with the first posting  “MY TRYST WITH LIC” on 28th February 2015- on the completion of FOURTEEN years of my retired life. Quite new to blog and all, I just emailed the information to all the email ids of my known friends and also shared with my Face Book and Google friends.

To my greatest joy and surprise that post had 148 views – one of the highest for any day from 28/2/2015 till this day!!!

Not only views but also feed backs and comments thrilled me. To all of them of course I acknowledged and conveyed my heartful gratitude then and there. Of course there were several phone calls from my good friends who where in the know of my telephone number.

We know that we read a lot but then no time or mood to respond in black and white! That is a part of our nature.

Yet,

Feed backs/comments and some of my replies are nearing 100 which I wanted to share with my great friends and hence here it is!

Feedback/comments help us to analyze our performance and provide a chance to improve and hence I eagerly look forward from all my well meaning readers.

As and when time and mind working in unison with the body, kindly read and respond.

Subbaraman,I spent full 30 MTS to read your memories and only word I can tell it is a flurry of words, emotions, simplicity, honest words and what not. Congrats. I too have an intention to write a similar write-up. Yours will be a model for me. You are simply my role model for a few things like believe in yourself and do your best for people around you. Dear Shri. Subbaraman,

Kindly accept my best wishes on this memorable day. Do you know that this date is common to both of us!! Yes. I too retired on 28th February only. I do not know your date of birth in 1941. However, I was born in July 1939, but Feb 1939 was given in school records to help me appear for SSLC exam without any problem(I got double promotion from Class I to Class III and hence, studied for a year less) With this official date, I retired on 28th Feb 1997 (when I was just 57 years 7mths. the normal superannuation age being 58 at that time) This morning, I got up with the idea of my retirement date and when I saw your mail, I was surprised.

I will go through your write up leisurely. Best wishes once again.

Regards,

Swaminathan

Great! All the best for a happier and healthier, peaceful and prosperous retirement year!. As you read you will find a reference to the real and actual date of birth-under STINT AT OOTY!

My actual DOB is 31/07/1941 and the official is 17/02/1941. Our retirement age was revised to 60 and hence I enjoyed official life by two more years and 68 days more! Sixty eight days more- what is that? Please read and you will know!?!?!?

Comment: Dear Sir,

I am immensely impressed by your detailed account of your Tryst with LIC.

I wish that one day I will also pen down few lines like you about my journey in LIC that started at Bhilai Branch under Raipur Division in April 1983 as a Direct Recruit Officer of 12th Batch and will end in November 2018, unless the God willing otherwise.

Though I heard a lot about you from the LICians I am coming across from the Kadapa Division I felt very happy to get it vetted from your own account.

I am presently holding the position of Principal, ZTC, Hyderabad.

With regards,

S.Raja Sekhar

PS: Without any intention to hurt you I take liberty to point out two factual inaccuracies noticed by me in your write up.

  1. In page 39 of your write up the retirement year( original ) was mentioned as 2009 instead of 1999. b) Similarly in page 44 the last FY in your service was mentioned as 2001-02 whereas it should be 2000-01 as you retired in Feb 2001.

Thanks. I am delighted.

Yes it should be 1999.

It is only 2001-2002 as I have referred to therein I unofficially continued till May 8th 2001- 68 days beyond the actual date of retirement at the request of the then ZM!?!?!?

Thanks again.

Comment: Sir, I started reading your “memoir” with great enthusiasm. But could not finish it in one go. Hope I will be able to do that soon. It was certainly amusing and interesting.  I am glad that you had preserved so many photos even. Sitting in arm chair, savoring in the evening of one’s life of his own achievements,(!!!!) however small they may be, IS CERTAINLY A VERY PLEASANT EXPERIENCE. It gives some satisfaction that “YES…. I DID MY JOB WELL!!!”- Notwithstanding certain omissions and commissions here and there. I too attempted writing some time back my “musings” like these in Telugu. Let me see whether I can share these with the FB friends!!!!TCR.

Comment: Very interesting history of your career. You have seen many places, people and their attitude. Though I know your overall history, I am able to go deep into the minute details in your write-up. This is a good habit of keeping their own track record, either bad or good. It will be pleasant to recollect some of the past incidents, though they may not be pleasant during those days. I appreciate you for reproducing your past with interesting anecdotes. I feel, if some of the interesting events which took place are also mentioned with specific details. Overall write up is nice and interesting. All the best in your retired life!.

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire write-up, which gives us a vivid picture of your career, ups and downs (though there no downs) and your achievements, mending the ways of services to the public etc. Settling death claims within a short span of time is really an achievement to your credit. I know your personal interest in celebrating Insurance Week and you have mentioned about Villupaattu group in Thanjavur, in which I am also associated a bit (in writing the lyrics). Really I am not aware of your transfer to Rajasthan and the quick retransfer within a short span of time. During your first stint at Tanjore I know your sons, that too the junior one, who once walked all the way from Convent to LIC D.O. all alone. Bravo! I shall read it again and come out with some more observation. Thank you sir.

Quite interesting presentation of an involved career spanning a period of nearly four decades! I remember the association I was privileged to have with you in Thanjavur D.O. during late 1960s. When we were together in P.h.s. and you used to give the highest number of revival quotations and acted as a role model for others to follow. I cherish the association we had on subsequent occasions when you were heading Bikaneer and subsequently  Cuddapah divisions of L.I.C. And even after your retirement when you visited Hyderabad as a Trainer of Bajaj alliance. Best Wishes for a Long, healthy future!

NVS! We were quite envious of Shri Subbaraman’s energy, alacrity, and knowledge and willing to take responsibilities–He was a person with tejas and well-kept physique, due to his Yoga practices and clean habits and thoughts! I always feel fortunate to have been in association with him, when he was in Madurai. A prolific writer and a poet, he continues his activities, even after retirement. He never appears to be aging. May God be with him in all his activities!

Very interesting and inspiring read, Lakshman! Your dad is such a great writer. I don’t think it is common to see a person being so loyal to their Institution -40 years with twelve transfers. Wow… I remember that we used to tease for changing your native city periodically, depending on the person you were talking to..  Like, you belong to say kadappa, Ooty, Thanjavur to name a few. Comment: Read with great interest, as our periods of service in LIC almost coincide. Nevertheless experiences differ. I still remember how I missed all the automatic promotions in spite of becoming an AFFI in 1965 and FFII in 1969.

It was good going through your experiences with the LIC. The period I worked under you at the Avanashi Road Branch of Coimbatore are still very fondly remembered.

Though there was much heartbreak during the period of service, the most vivid one being the stagnation at the ADM’s cadre for 9 years, I now look back to the past with fond memories. I lead a contended and happy retired life with peace and tranquility. And your write up helped me rewind and unwind.

I am very happy for you and wish you and your family all the good things in life. My wishes to you also for a good health, happiness and peace!

GREEN MEMORIES- INSURANCE WEEK CELEBRATIONS!

Inaugurating 1600th Session and the open air class room “SHANTHINIKETHAN” in LIC Zonal Training Center, Ambattur, Chennai in 2000.

In the life of our nation, no other financial Institution has played such a sterling service as Life Insurance Corporation of India. Yes; LIC has entered its sixtieth year of service on first September this year. Every year commencing on first September LIC observes INSURANCE WEEK CELEBRATIONS for a week and I was very, very particular that the WEEK must be observed meticulously in letter and spirit on all the seven days without exception and hence I in my forty years of LIC service, started organizing the Week at my different stages-as AAO (Development) in Coimbatore during 1969-1972, as ABM  (Administration) in Ooty (1972-1975), as SSS Liaison Officer, Thanjavur Divisional Office (1975-1978), as Administrative Officer (SDM’Sec./Development) (1981-1983), as  Branch/Senior Branch Manager in Erode Branch I (1983-1987), Coimbatore Avinashi Road  Branch (1987-1991), as Marketing Manager, Bikener, Thanjavur and Salem (1991-1995), as Senior Divisional Manager(Kadapa) (1995-1998), as Secretary(Marketing) Zonal Office, Chennai (1998-2001). I had the pleasure of involving myself directly with the celebrations in all these stages and places. While I was Administrative Officer (Audit and Inspection) South Zone (1978-1981) I could not involve in the Week. In this way, THIRTY Insurance Week Celebrations in which my direct involvement was there and they remain as quite GREEN MEMORIES! Sitting at my Flat in Jeevan Bima Nagar, Chennai, brooding over the past at my 75th year of age, I vividly and pleasantly look back on these Insurance Week Celebrations” which I would like to share with my great friends of LIC and outside.

In my first post in my ENVIUS THOUGHTS in https://nvsr.wordpress.com I have shared exhaustively “MY TRYST WITH LIFE INSURANCE CORPORAION OF INDIA”- four decade long journey!

Hence I would strictly touch upon my green memories of the INSURANCE WEEK CELEBRATIONS only in this SUN DAY story-in the course of 2015 celebrations.

Normally my Insurance Week extends to EIGHT days-eighth day- ADULT LITERACY DAY!

First of September falling on a week day will be the closing day in a Branch and hence the celebration will be restricted to the Inauguration of SPECIAL SERVICE COUNTER by a local dignitary in the Branch office premises.

The school will be selected in such a way that Salary Savings Scheme can be introduced orextended in a big way!

Another day a talk in the Rotary/Lions/JCs Club about LIC and its achievements in serving the society will be delivered. Seventh day valedictory of the week will be held in a public auditorium with prize distribution and some cultural programme with an outsider Chief Guest.

Eighth day ADULT LITERACY day, in the adult education center in a village some donations like books, electric lights etc will be donated; participation in Government arranged functions.

With light variations in programs, all these thirty years celebrations are still green in my memory and pass through like a film!

In particular the way in which Insurance Week Celebrations in Thanjavur Division is very, very green in my memory.

Extensive press coverage used to be given in Hindu to Indian Express to Dinamalar to Dhinathanthi!

More heartening were the reports that appeared in Yogakshema and Southern Splendor SZ house magazine and South Central and Northern Zone House magazines.

These paper cuttings and the respective house magazines in my home library when I go through after 15 years of leaving LIC take me to very heavens!

“Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive but to be young was very heaven” a great poet wrote about Russian Revolution! It was indeed bliss to serve LIC for forty long years and more. In fact LIC is my Alma Mater where I learnt the great art and science of Life and living!

I took legitimate pride whenever YOGAKSHEMA the prestigious House magazine of LIC carried my articles on different subjects in those days when I was in service. But then, to find a story in AUGUST 2015 ISSUE OF YOGAKSHEMA written by Shri Hari Krishan Chaudhary,Chandigar under the title: “An encounter with a Septuagenarian Poet”  was heartwarming and took me to ecstasy as that encounter was with this writer!!!!!

In this way, my memories of Insurance Week Celebrations in different stations and different years are still green and fresh in my mind.  I used to tell my agents in those days that they should perform in such a manner that will remain ever green in my memories and I will be happily recollecting the same in my seventies and eighties reclining in my easy chair and responded splendidly in all my marketing assignments. Precisely that is what I am doing now on my tryst with LIC and in particular these Insurance Week Celebrations.

Thanks my dear viewers for your patient viewing!

“LIC Day” is today, a great day in the nation’s life
Quite sure, a nice day to remember in the Indian file
Serve people millions, presence felt and seen in thousand hues
Steps into sixty with youthful verve and strength- never in blues!

A household name in every part of our sacred Motherland
Runs to the succor of all who believe, with its magic wand
Helps in thick and thin of millions under its protection
Dedicated men and matters, with principles in action!

Pandit Nehru’s wisdom, Deshmuk’s farsightedness LIC  born
Born to serve the nation with all sincerity; pieces to torn
The views of the doubting Thomases on nationalization
Till this day unparalleled with lamp in its hands of protection!

Sixty years of service in the cause of people and nation
Untiring efforts of all employees quite in attention
Ever ready to serve millions in the field to advice
Grows the Corporation- to none and never a big surprise!

Lamps of security lighted in homes millions-awesome
Back bone of Indian economy stands erect wholesome
Sure to be in the lime light for decades to come and depart
All connected with past and present be complimented vast!

(I had the pleasure of serving Life Insurance industry for 47 years.- in fact LIC is my Alma Mater where I studied the art and science of life and living.)
