to me Here is a communication from my Spanish Pot friend |
Dear friend,
Our Iceland translator reminded me yesterday of the next poem Ithaca poem. I had a poem of the great German poet Enzensberger in mind who recently died, but then found out that Ithaca 752 will appear before Christmas and although I am not a Christian, I feel the replacing of Christmas, which I always regarded as a celebration of peace, by a commercial “highlight” a loss. I therefore selected an “old fashioned” poem by the famous poet Rilke.
Children are starving in Afghanistan, more than 400 persons have been killed by the Islamic dictatorship in Iran and nobody protest against the horror committed by Putin in Ukraine. I feel like Li Tai Po who wrote:
“ I have my own world / which I do not find any more between humans”.
My generous Chilean publisher Luis Cruz-Villalobos who published already a large selection of Ithaca poems in English and Spanish, just published a collection of excellent poems by Anna Keiko who weekly publishes the ITHACA poems at several Chinese websites and at the website of Shanghai Huifeng Literary of which she is founding president. Please find information attached. Contrary to most poetry publishers, Luis does not ask any money from the poets he publishes, promotes them at literary websites and distributes the books at a dozen of Amazon websites. Any publicity is welcome. By the way, Luis might also be interested in your poetry.
Please let me have your translation.
Wishing you a peaceful Christmas.
Germain

Christmas
The winter storms penetrate
the world with furious power.
There sinks on snowy wings,
the fir-scented night . . .
There floats by the light of the candles
quietly, hardly meaning it,
through poor wandering hearts—
Faith—once it was.
There gleam tears in the eye,
you flee the joy—and weep.
Longingly, you recall your childhood—
Oh, if only it were as it once was!
You cry! The bells are ringing.
It descends in festive splendor,
descends on snowy wings,
the fir-scented night.
Rainer Maria Rilke, (Austria 1875-1926)
