ITHAKA POEM:745: The Poets Work at NIGHT!

Dear Irwan,

With the concerts I am even more busy than usual. That is why I have selected a poem that I had already more or less planned. The poetess is a famous Italian poet and of course Vincent van Gogh a famous painter.

The first Ithaca concert last Sunday was a success and the fans of various nationalities were extremely happy, even grateful, that after 2,5 years of Covid interruption the events – a unique combination of excellent classical music, poetry and painting – take place again. I will send you the information.
As you know, to realize a successful event costs time and affords. But we made many people happy. Some video recordings have been made, but the size must be reduced before they can be sent. I asked one of my friends. If he manages to reduce the size, I’ll send some videos to all the Ithaca translators.

Best wishes

ps I tried to send as usual, but Digital Dictator Microsoft made problems.  So I try as simple mail to send you the poem. Not attached but in the mail.

The Starry Night, Vincent van Gogh

The poets work at night
when time does not press on them,
when the roar of the crowd falls silent
and the lynching of the hours ends.

Poets work in the darkness
like night hawks or nightingales
with their sweetest song
and fear to offend God
but poets in their silence
make far more noise
than a golden dome of stars.

Alda Merina, Italy (1931 – 2009)

Translation Germain Droogenbroodt

  1. Silence and being alone sans distractions provides the right fodder for the imagination to work out and enormously pour what resides in the mind out in the open for the poem lovers!
Sleep loss is no more an issue to the poets who sit for the night to go about their pleasant job!
